Listening to love songs these days is kind of depressing. They’re a combination of cheatin’ hearts, hook-ups, break-ups, and repetitive mushy lyrics. Exactly one of the reasons why a lot of us here in Country Daily are happily content staying old school. (And we’ll keep on digging for this soul music and ‘diamonds in the roughs’ kind of songs.)
Nevertheless, thank heavens for the types of Eric Church, Mo Pitney, Scotty McCreery and Josh Turner! They keep the spirit of traditional county sounds well and alive even at the turn of the century. Here’s one good piece from Eric Church.
“Like Jesus Does” by Eric Church
Casey Beathard and Monty Criswell penned this romantic ballad. Released in January 2013, it’s Eric Church’s 13th single and 8th to be certified Gold by the RIAA. Lyric quality perhaps, it peaked on various song charts including Canada (Canadian Hot 100), Canada Country (Billboard), US Billboard Hot 100, US Hot Country Songs, and US Country Airplay.
Even Church loved the ballad because it served as the reflection of his relationship with his wife, Katherine. He explained,
“True love is when you love a person in spite of all their fallibilities, and I have a lot of them. I’m definitely at times hard to love, and that’s what’s great about Katherine and the way she loves me. She loves me in spite of those things and really for those things.”
Song’s Anatomy
To add weight to the emphasis of the song’s message, repetition was essential. Chorus was the chosen part to be emphasized. The unconditional love described was phrased in Biblical lingo. Traditionally, the mandate’s on the shoulders of men. They’re expected to emulate the way Jesus loves his church. With “Like Jesus Does,” the table’s turned around. This time, praises go to a woman’s Christ-like love.
Not surprisingly, fans were very affirmative and supportive of the content. The music video was plain and simple. In black & white, it only has Church singing with his guitar. That’s just another testament that good music is recognizable even without a fancy set up.
